Karatekas seek assistance

2015-06-18 06:01

TWO karate students from the South Coast and their sensei will represent South Africa in the World Weight Kyokusinkaikan Tournament in Japan in December.

Sensei Mandla Ngubane will be graded on his fourth Dan and his students Zanele Gumede and Andile Manchi made it into the South African team.

Gumede and Manchi from Mthwalume and Gamalakhe respectively came third and fifth making them a part of the top eight students who qualified for the South African team at the Kuyoshinkaikan All Africa Karate Tournament in Cape Town recently.

The pair has been training with the Gamalakhe Ugu Kyokushin-kaikan Karate Centre under Sensei Mandla Ngubane for more than five years.

Asanda Akoon of the centre said the organisation is very proud. “We are very proud and excited about the Japan trip and now more hard work lies ahead, moreover we need funds for the trip.”

She asked the public for support. “We appeal to our local community, government and businesses to support us in raising funds for this special trip to Japan. “I have been paying out of my own pocket to take these karatekas to various tournaments in preparation for the world tournament and did it all out of love for karate, but now I say without hesitation, the trip to Japan won’t be easy to fund which is why I appeal to whoever can help, to do so,” said Akoon.
