Let’s make our roads safer editorial comment

2015-07-23 06:02

YET another week has passed and the carnage on our roads continues unabated.

The current spate of accidents is clearly without precedent and it is time something is done to prevent more lives being lost.

It starts with motorists and they are the ones who should ensure they make the road safe for them and others.

A few precautions can help you achieve this:

• Wear your seat belt.

• Do not drink and drive.

• Respect other drivers and be courteous on the road.

• Rest after every 200km or two hours behind the wheel. You can do this by safely pulling to the side of the road and walking around to stretch.

• Do not text or use your cellphone while driving.

• Keep to the speed limit.

• Ignore angry motorists who want to engage in road rage.

Every situation is different and many accidents happen for various reasons not included above. It is up us to make our roads safer.

Our condolences to those who have lost loved ones on the road
