Let’s move forward, together

ALLOW me to respond to the letter by Councillor Potter which appeared in the South Coast Fever (9 July).

The proximity to the 2016 local government elections certainly activates individuals to seek currency through their clarinating media statements. It is against this background that I view Potter’s reprehensible feelings to a mayoral response.

Without having to analyse each paragraph of her letter, there is admission of a measure of frustration that has to be endured in certain areas of service delivery. Departmental communication with affected individuals is a case in point. If this is the feeling of our respected citizens, it is indeed appreciated and work has to be done to reduce this deficit.

To this end, we as councillors - Potter included - have a directive role to play in council.

However, it becomes insufferable when a councillor, who has access to all information and the right of presence at the various portfolio - where matters can be fast-tracked - approaches the media instead of seeking solutions at these forums.

Inherent in this dishonourable behaviour is glaring self-serving, political indulgence. To want the media to solve one’s electoral obligation can only be interpreted as an abrogation of one’s responsibilities as a ward councillor.

I trust Potter will attend these additional portfolio meetings and find solutions to her tabulated concerns.

Potter should remain cognisant of the reality that merely directing emails to official desks does not necessarily translate into an outcome.

Advisedly, she should make constant follow-up and communicate in a manner that is encouraging. A change in approach will really benefit the community.

Let’s move forward, together, respectfully.

Hibiscus Coast Municipality Speaker
