MORE than 70 Port Shepstone Lions, Lion Ladies and their guests celebrated the club’s 45th annual presidential induction during a glittering event on Saturday at the Port Shepstone Country Club.

Outgoing club president Alastair Warman paid tribute to the Lions and Lion Ladies for their outstanding services to needy communities and individuals throughout the year.

The Lion of the Year Award was presented to council chairman elect Denis Meyer in recognition of his support, guidance and tireless commitment to “lionism”.

President’s Appreciation medals were presented to Lion Kevin Ross in recognition of his commitment to service and fundraising projects and Lion Gary Vogt for his outstanding commitment organising and running a successful Lions golf day fundraiser.

Outgoing Lion Lady president Anna Compion presented her “Lion Lady of the Year” award to Lion Lady Betty Bing in recognition of her tireless efforts and ongoing support.

A record 25 club members were awarded for 100% attendance of club meetings throughout the past year. Other awards included 20 years of membership awards to Lions Denis Meyer and Pieter Van Niekerk, 15 years of membership award to Lion Jean Masson and 5 years of membership awards to Lions Gary Baker and Andre Beneke.

Meyer formally inducted Lion Jeff Smith as incoming president.

In his acceptance speech, Lion Jeff praised his predecessor for a successful term as president and informed all members that during his term of office he will focus on increasing projects aimed towards youth upliftment and the possible reintroduction of a Leo Club.

Lion Lady Anita Hulley was also inducted as the Lion Lady President for the forthcoming year.

Hulley, now a veteran at serving her community, renewed her commitment to leadership and the encouragement of the Lion Ladies to embark on projects that they are all committed to.

The club has a busy start to the new Lionistic year as it is hosting its 30th Lions Show, the 2015 Miss South Coast Pageant and the first Lions Show MTB Mountain Bike Classic.

The club will also be hosting 40 underprivileged children from the Free State, who arrive on the Saturday of the show and will be accommodated at the Pont Holiday Resort in Port Edward for a week-long holiday by the sea. - Supplied
