Living expense hikes don’t affect the homeless

2015-10-08 06:00

HOMELESS people say the escalation in living expenses has less of an effect on them as everything is provided for them at the shelter.

The increased price of food and cosmetic essentials is also not a worry and would only affect them if they were living elsewhere.

Nyameka Veldman, originally from the Eastern Cape, is currently living at Hambabuya Homeless Shelter.

“We are not directly affected by the increase in living expenses. We get food and water for free. Those are the basic needs for a human to live on. However, if I was living somewhere else then maybe I would feel the strain,” said Veldman.

Sue (who did not want to give her surname), also from Hambabuya, said she is a retired school teacher and is living off a pension and that life outside the shelter would be difficult as she has to take care of her unemployed son.

“If I was not living in this shelter I would be affected by the hike of living expenses.

“Obviously I would find a retirement home which is very expensive on its own. I would also have to buy groceries. I just wouldn’t cope,” she said.

The homeless said they are grateful to have a place like the shelter where everything is given to them
