Make that effort to heal society

2015-06-25 06:00

LAST Tuesday I was on my way to catch a black taxi to South Coast Mall. Across the road a middle-aged black lady was rearranging the boot of her car.

Spreading my arms wide I approached her with “I see you’re waiting for me?” She asked: “Where are you going?” Laughingly I replied “Southcoast Mall!” Her response was “Jump in.” I emphasised: “South Coast Mall.” She said: “Yes, I’m on my way to Adams Mission,” so I sprung in beside her and we chatted away like two old friends.

Taking her cellphone number I promised to call her to arrange standing her to a cup of coffee the next time she visits Margate. What a lovely person, her name is Gugu Langa, and I’d like to give a sincere thank you to her.

Returning from an exhausting day running up and down a mall in the process of refurbishment (and battling to find a toilet I desperately needed) I stood in the queue awaiting for a Margate taxi.

What a lovely trip. More whites should make use of black taxis. The trip to Margate was only R6 and the people were very friendly and obliging.

I believe in dialogue and there was lively conversation. We have to build bridges to show our black neighbours that we all basically made of the same stuff. Jesus showed no preferences.

There were so many instances in his parables where kindness was extended to Jews by Samaritans whom the Jews would not associate with. Jesus accepted the prostitute and the tax collector.

It’s about time we behaved in like manner towards our warm and spontaneous neighbours.

On many occasions it has been black men who have stopped to help a white woman motorist after so many whites have driven past and closed a blind eye to her plight. It is up to us white (the minority) to build these essential bridges if we intend to remain in Africa.
