Municipality’s water is safe to drink

2015-09-24 06:00

THE municipality reassures residents in areas where there has been concerns of “salty” content in our water that the situation is being closely monitored by our water services department.

It has been discovered that this is due to low river flow levels resulting in sea water, during high tides, to push up to our abstraction point at the St Helen’s Rock pump station. We have since adapted our water pumping schedule against the high tides in an effort to alleviate this situation. Water sample results taken after routine tests have indicated that the water is in no way harmful to the health of our residents and therefore is safe for drinking.

Our water quality is extensively monitored regularly guided by the adopted South African National Drinking Standards (Sans), which serves as a delivery specification of our water to the consumers. The water that has been consumed by residents is well within Sans 241 and World Health Organisation water quality guidelines.

The municipality apologises to affected consumers for any inconvenience caused and also reiterate our commitment as a water services authority to continue providing safe drinking water to all our residents.

Ugu District Municipality will continue to promote working together to create an environment that is friendly, responsive, accountable, effective and efficient for our communities
