“WE [SPCA] are not in competition with the private sector and we will not see any animal suffer due to injury of disease,” said Michael Muller, SPCA manager, at the opening of the new animal hospital on Saturday.

Aptly named the Marlene Bense Animal Hospital, the opening saw scores of animal lovers, volunteers and sponsors show their support and excitement about the new hospital.

Bense donated R200 000 worth of equipment to the project.

“The old clinic was in a bad state - it was also in the middle of the SPCA grounds which posed a risk for cross-contamination and could not cater for the thousands of animals we have been attending to,” said Muller, explaining the need for the new animal hospital.

The old facility was only equipped to handle 1 500 animals a year, but has treated three times that amount.

“I am at a loss for words when I think about all the people and businesses who have made this project possible. I’d like to thank each one for their tremendous efforts.”

He said that due to their kindness, the hospital was completed in a year.

Muller said the SPCA is continuing its drive to sterilise animals.

“One dog and it’s litter can reproduce a total of 67 000 pups in six years. A cat and her litter can produce up to 420 000 kittens in the same time-span,” he said
