Plate digit furore

2015-07-09 06:00

A LOCAL man is angry after discovering he had to fork out thousands to register his second-hand car’s four-digit number plate in his name

Johan BanBereda said he registered the vehicle at the Port Shepstone traffic department for which he paid R185, but when they saw that his licence plate was an old type containing only four digits they refused to transfer ownership to him, insisting that he buy a new one for which he had to pay an extra R200.

“I really don’t understand why I had to pay an extra R200 when I already had a licence plate. I just wanted to register the licence plate in my name and I had all the necessary documentation for it. They just told me ‘no, they can’t do it because it is law’.”

When contacted, the car dealership from where he bought the car said they gave him all the documentation and can do nothing further to assist him.

A cashier at the traffic department, who is not authorised to speak to the media, said the old number plates with four digits could still be used however, the new owner would have to apply for the transfer in Pietermaritzburg for which he would pay R2 250.

“Because the old four-digit number plates are no longer issued, new owners of used vehicles need to get them transferred in Pietermaritzburg for R2 250. This is why we usually advise customers to rather buy new number plates for R200,” said the cashier.

The cashier said this has been the law for at least five years and all number plates that have fewer than five digits are regarded as “special number plates” and need to be applied for and purchased for R2 250
