Protect those who protect us

SIX policemen killed in the line of duty in one week is not acceptable.

In a supposed democracy policemen or police women are the custodians of law and order. They are expected to serve and protect all.

The task of an officer is arduous. They face many difficulties and dangers. Many do not know whether they will return home when they kiss their families goodbye before leaving for work.

A policeman or woman is expected to be a social worker, a legal expert, a paramedic, a counsellor and sometimes even a doctor, to name but a few at the scene of a crime.

They are compelled to withstand all weather conditions including heavy rain, extreme heat and cold and hail.

What becomes of their precious families and dependants when they are unscrupulously gunned down.

It is our duty as the community to root out this evil.

So many lives in a few days is a bit much.

I urge authorities to commence a campaign in earnest. Have they started a manhunt for the culprits. I don’t see any evidence in the press of rewards being offered for the successful arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Arrest culprits and bring them before a court of law without further ado. Courts must impose heavier penalties to guilty offenders. The courts must set an example for such heinous crimes.

Protect those who protect us under extreme circumstances.
