AFTER years of pleading and waiting ,Merlewood Primary School’s dream of getting a new school has come true.

It was all smiles at Merlewood Primary last Wednesday when officials visited the school to present the good news regarding the building of the school.

In a statement the School Governing Body (SGB) said it had a plan to lock the school gates on Wednesday if the Department of Education failed to respond to the matter, but this didn’t have to be done.

The SGB said officials from the Department of the Education, Planning and Infrastructure and KZN Legislature announced that funding amounting to R25 million has been made available to build a new school and that construction is to start in December or at the latest in January.

At the meeting officials met with the schools’ senior management and members of the SGB executive to present the plans and the accommodation scheduling model.

The model of the new school will cater for the current population of the school and will be built on the same site.

SGB chairperson Mirelle Archibald said the presentation of the plans to school stakeholders was facilitated by Jaya Pillay, CES for Planning and Infrastructure in Ugu District, who said it was possible that the school project would go out to tender in August and that a contractor would be appointed within the next two months
