Response provides astonishing insight

THE response by Councillor Venter (Fever, 31 July) to my previous letter provides some astonishing insight into the DA’s strategy and operations in politics.

Essentially it is a strange and cowardly one.

Be it in Parliament, council, public or the media, they engage in personal, rude and reckless provocation. Regretfully, when countered by a concomitant response, they cry foul, scream for protection or stage their customary “walk-out”. Believing that they are the custodians of moral authority and paragons of knowledge they want to exercise control throught their unrelenting programme of criticisms.

In the latest public trading, Cllr Venter must be reminded that it was Cllr Potter who used the term “reprehensible” to a response from the mayoral office. It was this attitude that was considered “dishonorable”. In fact, it was downright rude.

Whip Venter failed to interpret this as blatant provocation and instead drivels on non-issues skirting triviality.

Her claim that I was looking throught “rose coloured ANC glasses” is frivolous. In that same response there was admission of a measure of service delivery and communication deficit and encouraged a convergence of our efforts in order to put systems in place to benefit the public.

Obviously Cllr Venter disagrees on this because of the DA’s ideological position of not co-operating with the ANC. There is indeed a litany of examples of this attitude which has frustrated service delivery.

But the DA Whip’s response provides a serious revelation of a party that is frustrated by its ineffectiveness as an opposition.

When going to the polls next year, the public must not forget their admission that they consider themselves as mere “visitors” in council. Indeed, a grave indictment on their ability to serve society. While it is true that “visitors” cannot participate in the discussions at a portfolio meeting, councillors can do so by tabling motions. Using such an approach, any issue of public concern can be given urgent attention. Making petty excuses for one’s inability to deliver is easily noted by a discerning public. And this is no “red-herring”.

Finally, the editor will confirm that I have consistently used the designation of councillor in my letters. I assume it is the editor’s prerogative to use the title initially and the surname thereafter. That’s efficiency.

However, Cllr Venter, the designation of a “councillor” is a very transitory one as many of us will learn shortly. Don’t get to comfortable with it’s usage, 2016 is not too far off.
