Rules have a purpose

A BARRIER or double barrier lines on the road warn us that we cannot judge traffic ahead due to a blind rise, a curve or some other cause.

An unseen vehicle could be approaching at speed in our direction that we are totally unaware of. Hence, not seeing a vehicle approaching when flanking such solid lines does not in any way indicate that it is safe to overtake or cut a corner.

It takes some time and a certain amount of speed to overtake another vehicle, which means that if overtaking with a limited view of the road ahead, one could be speeding towards a head-on collision at a combined speed of around 120 km/h or more. At some 200 km/h, racing drivers cut corners in order to “straighten” the curve and improve road holding. They do not have to contend with oncoming traffic. At 80 km/h on a public road? Please, this is extremely immature.
