ON Sunday scores of professional and amateur cyclists took part in the Sardine Classic at Port Edward Holiday Resort. This well-established even, powered by Bundubashers MTB Club and produced by One Way Productions, was well co- ordinated. With a R10 000 cash prize, courtesy of MacBanana to the overall winners of the 45km, there was high motivation from the group of mountain bikers.

Unfortunately, defending champions Andrew Hill and Natalie Bergstrom were unable to retain their titles, although they still landed a place on the podium.

Brendon Davids peaked brilliantly with his training for world champs and was more than two minutes ahead of the second place with a fast time.

The female race was neck in neck with Hayley Smith racing ahead 5km from the end and winning by just over a minute. One competitor said the course was tough where for most of the route you had to and#034;work continuallyand#034; to make it up the hills.

But the rewards of reaching the top outweighed the muscle strain as they witnessed the incredible views and ambience of the Umtamvuna landscape. Beautiful weather was warmly received as fun was had by all family members and friends at the food court and children’s zone.

The day ended in a suspense-filled lucky draw, with vouchers, accommodation packages and bicycle accessories up for grabs. - Supplied.
