COMMUNITY members in Shelly Beach area have started a crime watch initiative and are working with the SAPS and security companies to prevent crime. Arthur Venter is at the helm of the Shelly Beach Crime Watch group and invites community members in the Shelly Beach area to contact him and become part of the group.

Members regularly patrol the streets during the day and night in order to report suspicious activity.

“They are also in the process of marking the lots for easy identification in case of an emergency.

“Patrols with bicycles and clearing of vacant lots and bushy areas are only a few of the projects that are in the pipe line to make the area a safer living area,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

A Whatsapp group has already been established as well as a Facebook page.

On Saturday the group took part in a crime awareness walk through the neighbourhood and handed out pamphlets to residents.

Venter can be contacted on 082 854 9167 or alternatively contact the Shelly Beach SAPS sector commander, Warrant Officer Johan Maree on 079 500 0728.

Port Shepstone Cluster Commander Major Thembi Ndlovu welcomed this initiative from the community of Shelly Beach and urge residents to become part of the group.

A clear message must be sent out from residents that criminal activities will not be tolerated in residential areas and that the community will support the SAPS in bringing them to book. - Supplied
