ORIBI Plaza shoppers lined up to get checked and tested when the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital management staff dedicated two hours conducting health screenings at the Pick n Pay entrance on Friday as part of their contribution to the “67 minutes” for the Mandela Day initiative.

Staff checked for diabetes, weight, HIV/Aids, blood pressure and eyes and shoppers were educated on family planning.

Hospital medical manager Dr Busie Dlamini explained the importance of knowing your body mass indication (BMI) index to Nokuzola Masuku.

“Checking weight and height is important to determine your BMI index as this indicates whether you overweight and if you are at a risk of being diagnosed with diabetes and heart disease.”

Shopper Fred Carter had his weight and height checked and discovered he was 10kgs overweight.

“The sister told me my height and weight indicates that I am overweight and I have to lose at least 10kgs. I know I will be able to do that if I run around the block a few times.”
