Special needs pupils awarded

SPECIAL-NEEDS pupils in the Ugu District Municipality were awarded at an awards ceremony for performing well at school.

The ceremony was held at the Suid-Natal High School on Wednesday. The event organisers, Thandi Madikiza of Suid-Natal and district officials from Department of Educations, Nonhlanhla Lushaba, Nohlanhla Nzama and Deli Shazi, said the event is held to recognise pupils with special needs because in mainstream school prize-givings these children are not recognised.

Department of Education head office director, Jabu Khoza, said there are more than 17 000 registered pupils with disabilities in KZN.

Khoza said as a teacher in a special needs school it is their responsibility to give hope to a pupil who comes from a community which treats them as an outcast.

“As an teacher you have the responsibility to care and love your pupil because they might come from a home where they are looked at as a curse,” said Khoza.

Ugu Mayor Ntombifikile Gumede was the guest speaker at the awards ceremony and spoke about the white paper six programme.

“Paper six documents an education system that promotes the participation and inclusion of children with disabilities, maximising their personal development and enabling their ongoing participation and inclusion in society,” she said.

Gumede said seeing the number of disabled people and witnessing the awards ceremony today shows the implementation of Mandela’s vision.

“In the earlier days if one was disabled they were classified as useless and an outcast, but today we see that disabled people are whose who deserve to be given a chance in life and have the right to an education,” said Gumede
