THE KZN Financial Literacy Association (KZNFLA) and various financial organisations hosted a speech contest - Talk Money Speech - on finance at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre on Friday.

Schools from the Ugu District were invited to witness 12 Grade 11 pupils battle it out for the trophy.

It was a double celebration for the contest as it has been in existence for 20 years. The first one was held in the Ugu District.

Christi Naudé from KZNFLA said there were many objectives of the contest.

“We want to encourage careers in finance and financial planning as well as promote financial literacy in schools,” she said.

Naudé said that creating awareness of consumer rights and encouraging entrepreneurship also form part of the objectives.

The topics of the contest included “Planning my financial future, who can help me?”, “I ‘wanna’ make my own money, my own way”, and “So you want to sell me a financial product?”.

Naudé said the initiative was backed by the KZN Department of Treasury as well as the Department of Education.

“It is important to start financial education while children are still in school.”
