Taxi driver to hear fate in July

2015-06-04 06:00

THE taxi driver, responsible for the accident that claimed world-renowned cyclist, Burry Stander’s life, will now have to wait till July to hear his fate.

Njabulo Nyawose (27) expected to hear his sentence at Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, but the case has seen another delay.

He turned over a solid line in Shelly Beach on 3 January, 2013 and collided with Stander.

Nyawose was found guilty of culpable homicide and failure to obey a road sign in March.

Two witnesses took the stand and delivered a pre-sentencing report on Wednesday.

One of them was a social worker, Thulile Mkhungo, who said Nyawose showed remorse and broke down several times during her interview with him.

She told the court he had considered taking his own life several times due to the publicity the case had received, and because of financial obligations.

Nyawose has three children, as well as his mother and siblings, whom he supports.

The social worker suggested that jail time would not be an appropriate sentence as his family depended on him for financial support.

A correctional services court officer, Skhumbuzo Dladla, also took the stand and explained the rehabilitation programmes Nyawose could attend if the court found community service an appropriate sentence.

Sentencing will take place on 1 July
