IMAGINE walking from Bloemfontein to Port Elizabeth, a distance of 683 kilometres, in 15 days, with only a backpack and tent, camping on the side of the road and eating only what you’ve managed to carry with you.

Three young South Africans have decided to do just this.

One of them is Vicky van Jaarsveld from Shelly Beach, co-founder and co-owner of the Summer Heat Model andamp; Talent Search.

“The Journey” begins on Saturday, 5 September and aims to raise awareness about youth and social development as well as money for charity, namely the Emmanuel Children’s Home, Crossover Foundation and Pen Foundation.

“This is the second year this walk will take place. In 2014 Nkosinathi Manganyi and Luchantla Andrews walked from Johannesburg to Bloemfontein. This year I will join them,” said Van Jaarsveld.

She said both women reported they were transformed after the walk and the Journey turned into a lifetime experience.

Van Jaarsveld said she had been training for this journey, but not knowing exactly what to expect, she sticks firmly with the old maxim – “the body achieves what the mind believes”.

“Through sand storms, rain and raging sun, diminishing food supplies, blisters and absolute exhaustion, what really matters is The Journey – not the destination,” she said.

“We will be taken out of our comfort zone and it will definitely be a journey through life at the same time,” said Van Jaarsveld.
