Think PINK this month

2015-10-08 06:00

BREAST Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) is an annual international health campaign organised by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.

The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.

BCAM was founded in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries (now part of AstraZeneca, producer of several anti-breast cancer drugs).

The aim has been to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer.

In 1993 Evelyn Lauder, senior corporate vice-president of the Estée Lauder Companies, founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and established the pink ribbon as its symbol, although this was not the first time the ribbon was used to symbolise breast cancer.

Male breast cancer, which is rare, is generally overlooked. In 2009 the male breast cancer advocacy groups Out of the Shadow of Pink, A Man’s Pink, and the Brandon Greening Foundation for Breast Cancer in Men joined together to globally establish the third week of October as “Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week”. - Wikipeadia.

Breast cancer

Breast cancer is a malignant tumour that starts in the cells of the breast. A malignant tumour is a group of cancer cells that can grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread (metastasise) to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it too.

The female breast is made up mainly of lobules (milk-producing glands), ducts (tiny tubes that carry the milk from the lobules to the nipple), and stroma (fatty tissue and connective tissue surrounding the ducts and lobules, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels).

Most breast cancers begin in the cells that line the ducts (ductal cancers). Some begin in the cells that line the lobules (lobular cancers), while a small number start in other tissues. - www.cancer.org

Importance of finding breast cancer early

The goal of screening exams for breast cancer is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms (like a lump that can be felt). Screening refers to tests and exams used to find a disease, such as cancer, in people who do not have any symptoms. Early detection means using an approach that lets breast cancer get diagnosed and treated earlier than otherwise might have occurred. - www.cancer.org

Cansa Lower South Coast in Port Shepstone is holding some activities during October:

Cancer screenings at St Faiths Clinic from 7 to 9 October. Family Day at Margate Clinic on 7 to 9 October. Cansa will give a talk on 8 October.

An exhibition will take place at the Southport Clinic on Tuesday, 13 October from 8am to 10am.

Cansa hosts monthly support group meetings on the first Saturday of every month at their offices in Port Shepstone from 11am.
