ON Friday municipality chess representatives elected executive committee members for the district chess confederation at the teacher’s centre.
Mthandeni Mbutho from Ugu Sports Confederation explained the purpose of the gathering, saying the gathering is not about putting people in positions merely for recognition.
“We are here to form a structure that will represent the chess sporting code, which will be responsible for the entire district in terms of chess.”
Mbutho said many people forget they are elected by people and use their position to degrade those who put them there.
He said elected members should always remember they are in the position because of the people who need services.
“I know the elected body will have ambitions of developing this sporting code in various ways, but taking things step by step is always the way to develop any organisation,” said Mbutho.
He said that some people think about tournaments before organising inter-municipal challenges.
A member from the schools sport committee said it makes him happy that the committee is formed as it means that for participating schools will have a “mother body” that will be responsible for them.
There were six positions up for board nomination - chairperson, deputy chairperson, secretary, treasurer, coach, district head of schools in chess and an additional member.
Members nominating candidates were given the option of either a show of hands or by ballot and all opted for the show of hands.
After voting the official Ugu District Chess Confederation committee was announced - chairing the committee, Bheki Msomi, Sandile Cele (deputy chair), Sibusiso Mkhize (secretary), Nondumiso Chile (treasurer), Dudu Khoza (coach) and the additional member, Sifiso Ncayiyane
