‘We know poverty, you don’t’

2015-08-13 06:00

YOU drink, you smoke, yet you tell people that you are poor. It cannot be. My argument is that a smoker and a drinker cannot and should not claim to be poor.

My argument has come about from watching a lot of vagrants on our streets here on the South Coast.

I know some of them in person and it strikes me that most of them smoke and drink and some use illegal drugs, yet still claim to be poor.

A few months ago I took a conscious decision to stop giving out alms to these people. As someone who has a poor background myself, I thought helping them was the right thing to do.

But now I find it quite annoying that we give out our hard-earned money to people who won’t even buy a loaf of bread, but will be quick to buy their next cigarette, beer or shot of whoonga.

My advice to these “poor” people is easy - take those puffs, add them to those ounces of liquor, multiply your total by 365.

There you have it, you are not poor, not even close. We know poverty, you don’t.
