What vaccines do my dogs need?

2015-06-18 06:01

I HAVE recently made plans to go on holiday. I have two small dogs and a cat that I want to board at kennels while I’m away. However, the kennels will not board them unless they are vaccinated. I did take them to the state vet for free rabies vaccinations, but apparently this isn’t enough. When I bought my dogs from the pet shop about three years ago I was told that they had been vaccinated, and the state vet later vaccinated against rabies. What more is required?

It is a good sign that the boarding kennel you refer to insists on proof of a proper vaccination history. The intention is to guard against boarders being needlessly exposed to contagious and life-threatening diseases. The vaccines your puppies had before you bought them cannot offer a life-long immunity against all likely threats. Core vaccines should be given in all regions to help protect against sometimes widespread and fatal diseases which include Canine distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus infection and Rabies which is statutory. Current vaccination schedules for puppies are three initial vaccines at about six, eight, nine and 12 weeks, followed by boosters every year. The cats should be vaccinated to help protect against Feline panleukopenia, Feline herpesvirus infection, Feline calicivirus infection and rabies. The first vaccinations are due at eight weeks, followed by boosters at 12 weeks and an annual re-vaccination.

Ask your vet to answer any questions you might still have about the need of a vaccination regimen, and have confidence in the kennels that request evidence of this.
