THE Sportweni Academy Easter season, which hosts over 2 000 school athletes from all over the country annually, is bringing additional diverse racial demographics this year.

Established in 1974 Sportweni is one of the first sporting academies that offers intensive sport coaching and training for schools in school holidays.

The academy is run by retired Proteas batsman Rudi Steyn who said aside from highlighting the importance of sports in children’s upbringing their event was significant in its function as a South Coast brand.

“During our training sessions various accommodation places on the South Coast such as Kapenta Bay Hotel, Umthunzi Boutique Hotel, Oslo Beach Lodge and the Tweni Waterfront are fully booked for two to three weeks. All these people bring in revenue to the South Coast, so it is also a chance to showcase the South Coast experience,” said Steyn.

Over the years Steyn said the academy has hosted a myriad of schools, however, over the years participants have shifted from being whites-only to other racial groups.

“Having played in the IPL where you see a whole lot of different races come together to play, I’ve seen how sport can move beyond improving people’s physical well being to their social and intellectual as well.

“It gives us the opportunity to meet other people which in our day to day life we may have never met. And for a country like South Africa I think this is important.”

This season Sportweni hosted 50 schools including 26 rugby teams and 26 netball teams including the Hts Welkom High School, which has never missed a year since the academy was established in 1974.
