Alcohol advertising must fall

2016-03-31 06:00

I TOTALLY agree with the view of “Concerned Parent” (24 March). that alcohol advertising should be banned, especially on the radio, TV, and in other media.

For advertisers to say that people should “drink responsibly” is itself irresponsible because what one person may consider as being a responsible limit of alcohol consumption, another person may not. It’s a variable concept, not an absolute.

In my opinion the responsible thing to do is not to drink alcohol at all, or at least to ban the advertising of alcohol, as with cigarettes.

Advertisers make it appear that alcohol consumption is desireable, “cool and romantic”, and necessary if one wants to enjoy “the good life”, notwithstanding that the greater majority of deaths on the road are caused by drivers and pedestrians under the influence of alcohol, not to mention the misery, heartache, violence and unhappiness in the homes of those who are plagued by alcohol abuse.

I speak from personal experience. My father was a heavy smoker and an alcoholic and in the end, both these addictions killed him in his middle-age years. So for my part, I say alcohol advertising must fall.
