TWO rape suspects fled from police custody at Southport police station shortly after being arrested on Tuesday.

It is reported that while interviewing the victim, the two men managed to flee while handcuffed.

Back-up was called and K9 unit members from Port Shepstone rushed to assist.

Constable Senzo Nzama from the K9 unit acted on information and stopped a minibus taxi in which the suspects had jumped.

“They were both rearrested in Melville and face charges of alleged rape,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

A 26-year-old woman reported that she has been raped while walking in Stephen Road in Anerley by two men.

“They threatened her with a knife. One dragged her to the side of the road where he raped her. The other walked away,” said Wiid.

Ugu cluster commander, Major-General Thembi Ndlovu conveyed her appreciation to the community who came forward with information and praised the quick response of police members.

“It is the duty of everyone in the community to expose criminals who target vulnerable women and children. Let us all take a stand against violent acts against women and children,” she said. - Supplied.
