AFTER months of uncertainty, the process of selecting a new Ugu District Municipality mayor has finally been concluded.

The position became vacant after the sudden death of Tolomane Mnyayiza in December last year. Deputy mayor Mondli Chiliza, who has been the acting
mayor in the interim, has been named the new

The position was announced as being vacant in February after which there were reports of three possible candidates - Peggy Nkonyeni - a former PEC member, Cllr Ntombifikile Gumede - former Ugu mayor, and Chiliza.

In a report published a few month ago ANC Regional Secretary Mzwandile Mkwanazi said the party had to wait for the National Executive Council to screen candidates and then decide on someone.

On Tuesday the ANC called a media briefing where Mkwanazi said the chosen candidate was decided on by leadership in all spheres of the ruling party. He said the decision taken was based on the fact that there are no issues surrounding the
chosen candidate.

“The ANC has decided to elect Comrade Cllr Mondli Chiliza as the new mayor of Ugu District. Currently he is the deputy mayor, but he will soon have to vacate that position,” said Mkwanazi.

He said the ANC is ready to work with the new mayor.

“Cllr Chiliza has served in the district for some time and was previously the mayor in Umzumbe Municipality. He was also serving as the deputy mayor for the district and the speaker.”

Chiliza was inaugurated yesterday (Wednesday).
