Animal welfare organisation needs help

2016-09-08 06:00

4 PAWS and a Tale Rescue is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO).

Its main objective is to relieve the suffering of cats and dogs in the Scott burgh, Umkomaas, Craigieburn and Amanzimtoti areas, both urban and rural areas.

Many of the animals in these areas are owned by people who are poverty-stricken. The animals are not spayed or neutered and the resultant offspring add to the general suffering. The animals are not inoculated and if they contract diseases they are left to die. Rabies has occurred on numerous occasions. This disease poses a great danger to humans as it is fatal if no vaccine is administered immediately after contact with even the saliva of the animal.

The animals in so many instances are starving as they are left to scavenge for food.

What a sad life it is for hungry and sick animals with no-one to care for them or their babies.

To this end, 4 Paws renders a vital service. First off all, we feed hungry animals. While doing the rounds every morning from 5am to 7.30am, we look out for sick or injured animals.

These are put into the bakkie and taken to the vet for whatever treatment is needed. Most animals are returned to their owners unless they are in an abusive situation.

Secondly, we sterilise animals so the puppy and kitten populations are kept to a minimum. We spay and neuter. Where puppies/kittens have been born, we endeavour to place them in foster care until they get a forever home.

Thirdly, we vaccinate. We do this on an ongoing basis but occasionally we will do mass vaccinating especially for rabies.

Last but not least, we give love to these animals who sadly do not get shown love and affection.

We have only a few dedicated foster mothers and would really appreciate more.

However, the need out there is so great and the time has come to seriously consider getting our own property. This is an urgent appeal to our local communities – please help us to find a suitable property.

Our requirements are a large property zoned agricultural or commercial, must be in the area from Pennington to Umkomaas and a bit inland, and have a long-term lease at a reasonable rental. The property must also not be close to any human settlements.

Our aim has always been to give hope to these hopeless cases and we have so many happy endings that we could write a book about them.

Please help 4 Paws to do even greater work among our communities.

Please phone Nicky on 084 626 5508.
