Applying for a state pension

2016-01-14 06:00

IF you’re a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee and over the age of 60, you may qualify for a pensioner’s grant from the South African Social Services Agency (Sassa).

It has been brought to the Fever’s attention that many people are unaware of the various grants that are available or even how to go about applying for them, instead they take to social media in search of help.

A person applying for a pensioner’s grant must not be maintained or cared for in a state institution and must not be in receipt of another social grant. They must also possess a South African identity book and the person’s spouse must comply with a means test.

A means test is conducted to determine whether the applicant’s household income is below the stipulated amount.

Pensioners can visit their nearest Sassa office to apply. A family member or friend can also apply on their behalf if they are unable to travel.

Applicants will need an identity document, proof of spousal relationship status, sworn affidavit indicating income and assets of you and your spouse (if applicable) and proof of income of dependent children.

Sassa provides the documents for affidavits.

There are other grants available such as child support, child dependency, disability, foster child, grants in aid, social relief of distress and war veteran’s grants.

Sassa was approached for comment on the matter, but none was forthcoming at the time of going to press.
