Archaic beliefs and brainwashing

2016-08-11 06:00

IN her letter, Dr L. J. Peltz asks: “How primitive is our nation if we are still resorting to ancestor worship. How can a primitive people reconcile with other Eastern and Western cultures?” (4 August).

Yes, ancestor worship is a primitive aspect of culture, but so is the worship of gods in the Eastern and Western cultures referred to.

Secondly, many enlightened Africans, Asians or Europeans have been informed by reason and do not hold these ridiculous archaic beliefs. It seems thoughtless and racist to me to single out the African culture for criticism and fail to recognise the same dependence on unproven and illogical beliefs in virtually all other cultures.

There is obviously a strong need in the human psyche to believe in life after death, a hereafter and other fanciful myths, and this is universal, the only exceptions being those of us who are able to open our minds and be informed by reason.

All of these beliefs are inculcated from a young age and it is clear that many of us are unable overcome this brainwashing.
