AN artist from Mtwalume is currently working on a programme at the Bheka Mandelu High School where he tutors Grade 9 pupils on visual arts.

Mqobi Sengane, who has been doing visual arts as a profession since 2016, said he got involved in the programme, which is an initiative of the Department of Arts and Culture, so as to afford pupils from underprivileged backgrounds the opportunity to be exposed to the art.

Sengane said that he only discovered his talent in 2016 but believes he was actually born with it but did not embrace it due to being uninformed. Sengane said that the classes which were held three times a week at the school during weekdays, also helped keep the pupils away from harmful lifestyle choices like crime, and alcohol and drug abuse.

With the help of Sengane the pupils created three paintings during the programme, namely Nelson Mandela, Hector Peterson and their school principal Ezra Zindela. “They chose Nelson Mandela so as to commemorate the 100 years of Mandela this year, while Hector Peterson was for the upcoming youth month next month and the drawing of the school principal was just to honour him as a the leader at their school.

“I admired the pupils’ enthusiasm during the courses. They were very idealistic and were not afraid to think outside the box, which was very inspirational,” said Sengane.
