UGU Athletics Club members were overjoyed on Saturday at the club’s first awards ceremony and banquet at Port Shepstone Secondary School.

The event recognised some of the best achieving athletes and the most committed club members.

Programme director Jason Govender­ said as club members they don’t run to add a day to their lives, they run to add life to their days.

Members and the top three achievers in the various races that took place throughout the year were awarded.

In the 10km awards went to the Rickilalls - Rivashniee Ricklall came third, Navi Rickilall came second and Sivashni Rickilall, the youngest runner at the club, took first place.

In the male 10km club challenge Thobani Mbotho came third, second­ was Timothy Shangase and in first position was Mthokozisi Cele.

In the 21km Tholinhlanhla Cele was the only female participant.

Various awards were given for best times.

The most committed runner award went to Bhoni Brian and the most improved runner award went to Menzi Tshayiza.
