Authorities rip off recreational anglers

2016-06-30 06:00

I AM a regular winter visitor to the South Coast and stay for extended periods. While down here I like to do a bit of fishing and have faithfully bought the required permit every year.

Because I stay for at least five months, I opt for the year permit costing me R76 instead of the month permit which costs R50 per month.

For the past few years the necessary forms for a year permit were unavailable at the post office, only forms for the month permit. It was not a problem as the staff at the post office simply endorsed the form and collected the R76 fee for a year permit.

When I tried to renew my permit this year I was told that there are no forms available for a year permit and they were not allowed to endorse the forms for a month permit anymore.

Getting a month permit month after month is not an option for me and I am sure it is also a huge problem for local fishermen and other long-term visitors.

If one is unable to obtain the permit they prefer it will force fishermen and/or ladies to take the chance to fish without it. Local fishermen who rely on catching fish to put food on the table surely do not go for the month permit.

The authorities are ripping the recreational fishing community off in a bid to make more money by issuing only month permits and hoping to collect more fine money from people forced to fish without a permit.
