WHEN emergency services responded to a vehicle accident in Umtentweni on Tuesday night, they didn’t expect to find that several of the patients had actually been shot.

One person died and four were injured.

Many vehicles were involved in the accident which occurred on Batstones Drift.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the occupants of a silver Toyota RunX opened fire with heavy calibre firearms as they drove past a silver bakkie.

“The driver and his two male passengers were wounded. He then lost control and collided with two other vehicles,” said Wiid.

“One of the three men in the bakkie died,” she added.

Several cartridges were found at the scene. The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage.

Investigations are ongoing.

Netcare 911 paramedics and other emergency services found total carnage with accident debris and the twisted frame of the vehicles obstructing the road.

“The injured had not just sustained injuries from the crash, but had sustained multiple gunshot wounds,” said Netcare spokesperson Chris Botha.

After triaging the injured it was found that two people had sustained life-threatening injuries while three others were in serious condition. One person succumbed to his injuries.

Paramedics from several services worked to stabilise the injured before taking them to various hospitals.
