MARGATE SAPS have arrested a man (50), for the theft of fire extinguishers from Margate businesses last week. The arrest followed a report from a Margate businesswoman about a man who collected fire extinguishers under the pretence of working for the fire department. “The man arrived at her shop and approached her employee claiming he had been sent to fetch the fire extinguishers to service. It was later discovered the suspect was not from the regular [extinguisher] company,” said Margate SAPS spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka. He said the suspect was granted R1 000 bail at the Ramsgate Magistrate’s court. His case was remanded for August 31. KwaZulu-Natal SAPS have warned communities about criminals who commit robberies while pretending to be municipal or Telkom employees.Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said the warnings came after several robberies of this nature had occurred in the province. “A group of four or five males, wearing municipal or Telkom work wear and reflector jackets and mostly travelling in a Hyundai H100 pickup truck or a bakkie approach homes, pretending to be there for meter readings or any other maintenance purposes. “As soon as the occupants open the gate for them, they hold them up at gunpoint and rob them of valuables,” said Zwane.Zwane said employees should always be cautious and report suspicious people on their property. “Municipal employees do not come in groups when conducting meter readings and are usually on foot. No official will come to your property if you have not reported a fault to their customer services,” he said.
