It is alleged that the Treasury and Human Resource offices at the Ugu District Municipality were broken into last week. According to a source, four laptops and documents containing classified information were allegedly stolen during the incident.

A source at the municipality claims that the municipality was to be investigated by the department of Cooperative Traditional Affairs (Cogta) as is it bankrupt.

“Some contractors are being paid without any work being done,” claimed the source.

Police spokesman Captain Mpinge said a case of burglary was opened after an employee arrived for work at the offices in Bazley Street last Thursday to find that the offices had been broken into during the night and four laptops had been stolen.

“It is alleged that entry was gained through a door that had been forced open.

“Police are investigating,” said Mpinge.

Ugu District Municipality spokesperson spokesperson France Zama said the municipality could confirm that there was an incident of trespassing at the Municipality’s Treasury Offices on Bazley Street where equipment was stolen.

“The Municipality has opened a case with the Port Shepstone SAPS and an internal investigation is underway.

“Once findings have been made, a detailed report will be communicated on what transpired on the day of the incident,” said Zama.
