Breaks cause Margate water interruption

2017-01-26 06:01

RESIDENTS in certain areas of Margate, including Extension 3, have been left without water for days this week.

Frustrated and fed-up, they took to the Ugu Complaints Facebook page to vent and express their anger.

Fever contacted the Ugu District Municipality with reference numbers from calls that were made to their call centre to report the interruptions.

A team was sent to the affected areas to investigate and breaks were identified. “All supply systems in Margate and surrounding areas are relatively full, however, the municipality has discovered breaks, which may have attributed to the current water interruption. Technicians have been dispatched on site and repair work is under way,” said municipal spokesperson, France Zama.

The Fever asked Zama what long-term plans Ugu has to eradicate water interruptions that occur every day in almost all areas.

“The municipality has over the time admitted to its challenge of ageing infrastructure, which has largely contributed towards the frequent water interruptions experienced in most areas. We have committed ourselves to placing this matter at the apex of the municipality’s priorities,” said Zama.

Areas that require urgent attention in terms of infrastructure replenishment have been identified.

“The municipality is revising its annual budget so to ensure that we redirect our budget to prioritise this programme.” “A detailed programme on the infrastructure replenishment should be available once we finalise the budget adjustment process.”

The municipality advises consumers to regularly visit the Facebook page “Ugu Municipality Talk” to post all water and sanitation-related queries and receive updates on service delivery interruptions affecting their areas.
