Business owners want answers

2018-05-24 06:01

THE Local Business Forum of the Lower South Coast submitted a memorandum to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality at the municipal council chambers on Tuesday complaining about the “apparent” support given to foreign businesses as opposed to local.

The memorandum raised concerns from the business forum regarding the issuing of capital projects by the municipality to foreign service providers from the Eastern Cape and other municipal areas outside of Ray Nkonyeni.

The forum demanded that first preference be given to local businesses instead, as this would redirect investment into the local communities rather than taking it outside of the municipality.

The issued memorandum says that the economy and growth of local business was hampered by the influx of foreign companies who forced them to seek business elsewhere.

The forum members further alleged that municipal officials who were from outside the municipality themselves were invested in the execution of their professional duties on a personal level.

“These foreign businesses are investing in their own municipalities and have a bigger competitive advantage over us. We will never grow to be prominent businesses if this issue is not resolved.

“We hope you address this accordingly and look into the problem, because even the executive and administrative officials are from outside Ray Nkonyeni Municipality. We are competing with officials, who bring alien companies from their home towns,” reads the memorandum.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality spokesperson Simon April confirmed receiving the memorandum saying that the municipality would be attending to concerns.

“The municipality has accepted the memorandum and is considering it. There will be a meeting on Wednesday, May 23 with the authors of the memorandum for the municipality to give a feedback,” said April.
