ENTRIES for the Fourth Annual Hibiscus Coast Challenge have been opened and walkers and athletes have been invited to join.

The challenge is organised by the South Coast Striders and is sponsored by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and Ugu South Coast Tourism. In a press statement sent by South Coast tourism the organisers said entries can be done online on the South Coast Striders’ website and Facebook page, as well as at various points around the KZN South Coast. Online entries will continue to be taken up to April 25 and late entrants can register the day before the race at Shelly Centre 10 am till noon and at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre from 2 pm to 5 pm.

On race day, entries will be allowed between 4.30 am to 5.30am,” said Kim Jones. Jones said this Comrades qualifier is still growing strong, having drawn more than 750 entries in 2017.

She said the time limit for the ultramarathon is seven hours, however, six hours will be needed to qualify for the Comrades. All entrants who complete the 48km, 21km and 10km will receive medals and all pre-entries up to April 16, 2018, will receive T-shirts. The prize money for this year totals to over R49 000 including R10 000 worth of lucky draw prizes up for grabs on the day.

Ultramarathon runners must be 20 years or older, 21 km runners must be a minimum age of 16 years and 10 km runners 14 years of age on the day of the race.

Jones emphasised entrants note the conditions set out on the entry form, as the event is run in accordance with the rules of the IAAF, Athletics South Africa and KwaZulu-Natal Athletics. The route takes runners and walkers on a journey through the scenic KZN South Coast exploring rural back roads, farmlands, along the beach front with great sea views for inspiration and up a few challenging hills to keep things interesting.
