Cansa offers free care home for patients

2016-03-24 06:00

WITH numerous reports of cancer patients having to wait in the early hours of the morning at hospitals before being transported to Durban for their chemo treatment and cancer check-ups, Cansa South Coast announced there is a facility that patients can make use of, free of charge.

Cansa spokesperson, Sesethu Senene, said should South Coast patients need radiotherapy - many oncology units are in Durban - there is a nearby facility for them to make use of for daily radiation treatment for a maximum period of six weeks.

“It can be very worrying for patients who have to get up early in order to be transported to Durban for treatment at peak hour.

“There is no need for the rush as Cansa has the Makhuhla Care Home, which provides full accommodation, including all meals and with chauffeur-driven transport to and from treatment centres.

“Most of the people who live in the home are from the far corners of the region, but we also take local people, who are unable to manage the six weeks of the daily journey to Durban and back.”

Senene said the home provides 24-hour care and support in a holistic, therapeutic environment including individual and group counselling, support groups, therapeutic activities such as non-denominational praise and worship groups and craft activities.

“We have a ‘one-stop-shop’ where patients and the public can access stoma products, wigs, breast prostheses, nutritional supplements, as well as provide education and information,” said Senene.

The staff make guests comfortable and the home has received good reviews from those who have used it.

Among the good reviews Cansa received, comes one from a South Coast woman: “I was very happy there and the six weeks went by so quickly. I would definitely recommend this home for anyone needing radiotherapy.’’
