PORT Shepstone Thuthuzela Care Centre was visited by a senior official from Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), Keitu Semakane, on Friday. His visit came as part of the call by the national government to fight and deal with gender-based violence.

During the visit, Semakane said he was mandated to ensure that such centres are well maintained and properly used to the benefit of the community. He said he noted some challenges that are encountered by staff within the centre, such as the shortage of key personnel and turnaround time in reported cases, however, stressed that the core functions of the centre should be carried out despite challenges.

The visit coincided with Women’s Month activities by the department and is intended to advocate protection of women from all sorts of abuse, Semakane said.

According to Port Shepstone Thuthuzela Care Centre CEO says as much as the cases that are frequently reported are that of sexual abuse — community is encouraged to make use of such centres.

It is said that Thuthuzela Care Centre is operated in partnership with National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Department of Health, Department of Social Development, South African Police Services (SAPS) and other key stakeholders who play a role in gender-base violence cases.
