Chicken story - ‘on a serious note’

2017-08-03 06:00

I REFER to last week’s article (“Chicken saved from drowning”) and the Facebook post of the same article.

The online comments had me in tears with laughter.

However, on a more serious note, I need to highlight a few important issues.

As a disclaimer, I’m black and of the Christian faith.

That is the perspective I write this from.

As it can be easily gathered, the chicken was likely being used for a sacrificial ritual believed to remove curses or bad luck.

Again, from the Facebook comments, there is a notion that the curse has passed onto the black gentleman in the picture since he is pictured holding the chicken.

While the comments were lighthearted, there is a chance there will be real consequences for the guy, particularly because his family, friends, or him might hold the belief that the curse has in fact been passed onto him.

It needs to be checked with him if the story has not impacted him negatively and if so, how he feels it could be rectified.

As a Christian, I would encourage that he be told that those curses will not be passed onto him.

In Proverbs 26:2 it says “an undeserved curse won’t apply to him” and Isaiah 54:17 says “no weapon forged against him will prevail” and that “it is his Godly right and responsibility to care for every living creature on Earth” (Genesis 1:28).

However it is also his choice as to what to believe and how to act on it (Deuteronomy 30:19).

Lastly, there is a sometimes true stereotype of animals being treated more huma- nely than black people, even if not on purpose.

I trust it has been ensured that the black gentleman has enough food, groceries, and toiletries at home before having him hold a shampooed chicken, especially in light of the fact that he may be negatively affected by the photo.
