Class wins school vegetable-planting competition

BANGIBIZO Primary School in Mtwalume­ held a garden-planting competition at the school recently.

Called the “One Class, One Garden” competition, it was compulsory for all classes plant a vegetable garden in front of their classroom.

Some of the vegetables will be sold to sustain the project, the rest will be given to underprivileged families in the area.

Regina Luthuli’s class, Grade 1B, won the competition for planting spinach, among others vegetables,­ using the correct procedure that was taught to them. They received certificates, chips and sweets.

Vegetables planted included carrots, spinach, beetroot, turnip, cabbage, peas and green pepper.

The project was made possible by the Department of Agriculture and Environmental­ Affairs, and the Africa and Asia Association,
Umzumbe Municipality­ and the
area’s community worker’s programme.
