Condemn the evil bits, admit good

2017-03-30 06:02

THE “thought police” are at it again.

I have every sympathy with Helen Zille when she wrote that not every aspect of colonialism was negative.

Who emancipated the slaves? Who set up numerous mission schools throughout southern Africa and universities such as Fort Hare, Rhodes and others that have brought enlightenment and outstanding achievement to our part of the world?

Colonialism is part of our history, and of the vast number of all European countries who engaged in the “scramble for Africa”.

As the Spanish treasure the beautiful Moorish palaces that attract vast numbers of tourists to their land every year, so must we learn to value what has been achieved by past generations.

Obviously, there have been “evil” aspects which we need to condemn. But this blanket negativism is pure hypocrisy. I have a mental picture of our president burning Nkandla to the ground and retiring to his “beehive” surrounded by his cohort of wives.

Also of Johannesburg being emptied of Mercs and BMWs, with its streets bustling with ox-wagons and donkey-carts.

Should we all join the pre-colonial rush?
