RAY Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) ANC chief whip Cllr Zithulele Maphumulo (70) died on Saturday after an illness and condolences are pouring in from the RNM and Ugu District Municipality as well as from the ANC.

ANC spokesperson Selvan Chetty described Maphumulo, popularly known as Mashimane, as a great leader. He said he was respected across the province for his courage, discipline and wisdom. “His passing is a great loss to the ANC, this region and the province,” said Chetty.

Ugu Mayor Mondli Chiliza said the municipality will be visiting Maphumulo’s family to pay their respects. “Mashimane was one of the few remaining elders of our movement. It was not by coincidence that he was appointed ANC chief whip at Ray Nkonyeni Municipality. His vast experience in politics gave him an edge in discharging his chief whip duties, which he discharged with great distinction,” said Chiliza.’

In a media statement, RNM said Maphumulo left a void that will be hard to fill.
