A YOUNG couple who had just got engaged and planned to start a new life together died in a horrific accident in St Michael’s on Monday evening.

Xander Steinberg (24) and Angelique Janse van Rensburg (21), were on their way home to Margate when their motorbike collided with a truck that had jackknifed near the bridge on Marine Drive.

“They had just visited our mom and were on their way home,” said Quentin, Xander’s brother.

The couple worked together at The Biltong Shop at Southcoast Mall.

Condolences have not stopped pouring in to the family and on Facebook and their friends and family are still in a state of disbelief.

“Xander was a kind-hearted person. He loved computer games and riding his motorcycle through sugar-cane fields. He always had a smile on his face,” said Quentin.

Janse van Rensburg turned 21 in November 2015, and was looking forward to their wedding next year.

“She was the sweetest, kindest young woman and the two of them were inseparable,” said her mother Jackie.

“She loved reading and spending time with family. She and Xander had just started getting their lives together. They both had jobs and had a flat together,” she said.

The families are preparing for a combined funeral, but the date and venue is yet to be confirmed.

Margate SAPS is investigating a double culpable homicide.

Police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said the cause of the accident is unknown at this stage.

“No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing,” he said.
