THE KZN Department of Correctional Services (DCS) held national golf championships in the Kokstad Management Area, exclusively for correctional services officers from across the country.

This tournament, sponsored by Sanlam, was played last Friday at Port Shepstone Golf Course.

The motive behind this tournament is to improve the lives of the frail and destitute.

According to DCS President of Golf Alpheus Mohale golfers donate money to one charity organisation in the vicinity where the tournament is played.

He said the donation did not come from departmental coffers, it is generated from “fines” during the course of play by golfers.

“Port Shepstone is the best and we cannot afford to drop the standard, we learn every year, we improve every year,” said Mohale.

He announced that next year the Port Shepstone Golf Course has been identified as the host for the national inter-force games that will be played in August next year, and those will include DCS, SAPS and SANDF.

The Ziphakamise Orphanage in Oshabeni was the donation beneficiary, which received 36 school bags, lunch boxes, juice bottles, towels and R4 086.

The KZN Regional Commissioner Mnikelwa Nxele said he learnt a lesson from golfers in terms of how they lead and how they do their work. “I can assure you I have the privilege of working and leading with some of the golfers, I see the discipline the sport has bestowed on them and I see the discipline in their character as athletes who play golf.”

Nxele asked the golfers to go back and recruit more golfers for the benefit of DCS.
