Corruption exists across society

2018-02-15 06:00

THE daily narrative of corruption, bribery, scandal and theft of public resources is definitely not race related and no race, nationality, gender or class can claim a monopoly on morals and ethics.

The lead articles in the mass media and the recent revelations of collusion and corporate behaviour suggest that corruption is equally high in the private circles of the economy and reaffirms that venality is not race related.

The nature and scale of corruption in South Africa may be unknown to the masses but South Africans do know it exists and it is quite pervasive.

Although South Africa has developed legislation and institutions to confront corruption, digging deeper reveals that corruption is increasing and the measures to counter corruption and the abuse of power are facing huge challenges.

Corruption needs to be looked at and understood as an instrument that was used to enrich the elitist during the repressive rule of South Africa.

While apartheid beefed up and gave power and privilege to a selected group of people, corruption on the other hand fuels the high levels of economic inequality and supports and grows a crony-capitalist elite class of people.

In order to tackle social issues such as corruption and lawlessness effectively, the law needs to be applied consistently and an urgent broad-based economic dialogue needs to be commissioned on how to grow the economy in order to address the issues of inequality, economic transformation and job creation.
