A SOUTHPORT woman has joined an international drive to help save Reef Carneson (7), a child who was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of five months.

Annika Verheem urges all South Coasters to support her fund-raiser on Saturday, 2 July at Harbourview Spar.

Her target is to sell 1 000 cupcakes at R10 each.

“Harbourview Spar is going to bake the cupcakes for me. I would really like to sell all 1 000 of them and urge locals to please make this possible so we can help Baby Reef,” she said.

Verheem is friends with the little one’s family, who are originally from Gauteng, but moved to the United States in 2011 so that Carneson could get the treatment he needs.

He received a bone marrow transplant before his first birthday and his cancer was cured, but then he developed severe graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a complication that can occur after a stem cell or bone marrow transplant, which has left him with many problems.

He cannot speak clearly, open his hands properly, he struggles to eat, is extremely small for his age, he can’t straighten his legs and lives with pain every day.

Even now, six years later, the full extent of the damage caused to his internal organs is unknown.

“Last year Baby Reef was diagnosed with a secondary skin cancer on his head and has to suffer the distress of a regime of harsh topical chemo cream,” said Verheem.

Verheem is one of the many fund-raisers positioned all around the world who are trying to help Baby Reef.

“Please open your heart and allow this little boy to creep in. Your generous donation, however small, will help ensure that he can continue to receive this life-saving treatment,” said Verheem.

Once-off donations can be made by SMSing “Reef” to 38771 at a cost of R10.

Alternatively, cash donations can be made to RDJ Carneson, Standard Bank Northcliff, branch code 006305, account number 008417059, swift code SBZAZAJJ for international donations.
